  1. Tove Jansson's Moominvalley books are my favorite children's books in the world.

I have watched episodes from both the 1969 anime series and from the 1990s series, and I feel strongly that the 1969 series is vastly inferior. The characters are simplified, and most of Jansson's humor and insights into how people interact with each other are totally absent. It was made into a fairly generic adventure series.

The 1990s anime are not perfect, either, but the characters are much more interesting, and the animation itself is far more attractive. I can't see why anyone would choose to watch the 1969 series instead.

  2. The 1990s series, by the way, is called 楽しいムーミン一家, Tanoshii Muumin Ikka. It has 78 episodes, plus 26 more known as "Tanoshii Muumin Ikka Bouken Nikki."

  3. "Why?" You said "why"? Because Yasuo Otsuka is the GREATEST JAPANESE ANIMATOR EVER!

  4. We will have to agree to disagree about this. I prefer the 1990s series visually as well, but my main complaint about the 1969 series is that the story line was dumbed down. No degree of excellence in animation can overcome a badly told story line for me.
